The After Trauma Services program is thriving. Half way through 2015, we had met our annual goal for the number of individuals served. What follows is a summary of each component of the After Trauma Services:
Individual counseling: up to 8 free counseling sessions for all Tompkins County residents. We have developed a short term therapeutic response to trauma that has the capacity to teach coping/healing skills, process trauma and collaborate with clients on development of ongoing healing work post 8 sessions. We are working with clients that include referrals from The Advocacy Center; Cornell University, Ithaca College, Southside Community Center, Tompkins County Workforce and the Mental Health Association.
Support Group: we meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6:30pm. For community members processing grief after the death of a loved one dying by suicide.
First Monday Group: Advisory group to the program, currently focused on studying the work of Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, renowned trauma specialist.
Movement class: With recognition of the centrality of movement to healing, we offer a weekly QiGong class, Tuesdays at 5pm.
Community Outreach: organized annual Community Conversations on Mental Health focused this year on suicide. Program Committee member of the annual Depression Conference, sponsored by FLIC. Program Committee member of the Ithaca Therapist’s Group, who host 4 annual seminars for colleagues, taking place now at SPCS conference room.
