Rev Jack Lewis Suicide Prevention Crisis Service

Following a series of suicides in 1968, Ithacans lobbied for a 24 hour crisis service. Reverend Jack Lewis took the first call in 1969. The caller was a young man who felt so upset that he had decided the only solution was to kill himself.

With the help of our first volunteer counselor, the young man renewed his hope and sense of possibility. 387 calls were received that year.

Today, the Crisis Line answers calls from the 607 area code to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, as well as direct calls to our local number, 607.272.1616 – Monday through Friday from 10am-10pm.

The Suicide Crisis Line:
An Education in Listening

“What I’ve learned from the lines is that we can always improve the ways we listen to people dealing with these challenges. Listening to callers on every shift was a reminder that just being present with someone can make seemingly insurmountable strides, completely possible.”
~Dylan Gunaratne

“We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know.”
– Carl Rogers
